Silia Kapsis, a singer with Cypriot and Greek heritage that was born and raised in Sydney, has officially been confirmed to compete for Cyprus at next year’s Eurovision in Malmö.
The teenaged artist was revealed by broadcaster CyBC, after weeks of speculation, that she would be enlisted to represent Cyprus for the 2024 edition of Eurovision, making this the second consecutive year that the nation has chosen an Australian-born singer as their performer.
The 16-year-old already has a list of accomplishments in the entertainment industry, having served as lead singer for the Australia Youth Performing Arts Company and been a recurrent lead singer at various high-profile events across the world.
Kapsis released her debut song “Who Am I?” in 2022, a song she had written and composed when she was only 12, following it up with two other songs released this year in “No Boys Allowed” (March) and “Disco Dancer” (May).
In her short career, the singer and dancer has also seen her showcase her abilities in America.
She has worked with world-renowned choreographers and was selected for the ImmaBeast Dance Company in Los Angeles as well as danced with the late entertainer, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, on the “Jennifer Hudson Show”.
She also featured in a dance documentary by American rapper Taboo, of the Black Eyed Peas.
Outside of her singing and dancing, she has also found work in acting, playing the lead role, Zoe, in an Australian short film called “Pearly Gates”, as well as featuring on various television projects for Nickelodeon Australia, such as a news presenter for the show, “Nick News”.
Fellow Sydney-born singer Andrew Lambrou represented Cyprus in this year’s Eurovision in Liverpool and managed to reach the Grand Final, with his song “Break A Broken Heart” securing a 12th place finish with 126 points.
Kapsis will no doubt be hoping to match Lambrou’s success, and strive to even eclipse his result.
Cyprus notably holds the record for the most times participating in the Eurovision Song Contest without winning, their best placing coming in 2018 when Eleni Foureira finished second with “Fuego”.
The Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Malmö, Sweden with two Semi-Finals on Tuesday 7 May (First Semi-Final), Thursday 9 May before the Grand Final on Saturday 11 May 2024.
