The 2023 Greek Film Festival, presented by the Greek Community of Melbourne, is back, and this year’s lineup brings a diverse range of documentaries that delve into various aspects of Greek life, art, and identity.
From ancient history to contemporary issues, these films offer a comprehensive look at the vibrant tapestry of Greek culture and will be screened at Palace Cinema Como, Palace Balwyn Cinema, and the Astor Theatre from October 19 to 29,.
The documentaries are presented in association with the National Research Foundation Eleftherios Venizelos – Australian Branch and the Cretan Federation of Australia & New Zealand, demonstrating the festival’s commitment to fostering cultural connections and collaborations.
The lineup
My Father’s Studio: Directed by Kalliopi Legakis, this documentary takes viewers on a poignant journey through the forgotten archive of renowned photographer Takis Tloupas. The film showcases a rare collection of photographs captured by Tloupas from 1950 to 1980, offering a glimpse into both his artistic career and the anthropo-geography of Thessaly in the last century.
George Bizos: Icon: The film tells the story of George Bizos, a teenage refugee from Greece who went on to become a relentless human-rights lawyer in South Africa during a tumultuous period of violence and racism. Bizos represented freedom fighters, including Nelson Mandela, and his legacy continues to inspire advocates for human rights worldwide.
Venizelos – The Struggle for Asia Minor: Explores the life and challenges faced by Eleftherios Venizelos, one of Greece’s greatest statesmen, during a critical decade that included the Balkan Wars, World War I, the Asia Minor Catastrophe, and the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. The documentary combines dramatised scenes, rare archival material, and expert interviews to provide insight into Venizelos’ strategic choices and the aftermath of his defeat in the 1920 elections.
The Art of Lute in Crete: This film takes viewers on a timeless journey into the heart of the Mediterranean to explore the art of lute-playing. It follows passionate musicians dedicated to preserving this ancient musical tradition, emphasising its integral role in Cretan identity and culture.
