On the opening day of the Women’s Liberty A-League, not one, not two, not three, but four attendance records were broken – and we all knew this was going to be one hell of a season!

A total of 5,735 fans flocked to the Industree Group Stadium for the F3 derby between Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets, only to have their record broken three hours later by the Sydney derby between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers, with 11,471 fans in attendance.

But that wasn’t all – the total attendance for the day was an incredible 17,206, smashing the nine-year record held by the 2014 season.

And the best part?

This time, we didn’t even need double-headers to break the record – 11,595 tickets were sold for the first round of the 2022–23 season, and we blew that out of the water!

A-League Commissioner Nick Garcia commented on the first matchday of the Women’s League:

“Our plan for the FIFA Women’s World Cup started more than two years ago and today, we have three new women’s teams in the league, a full home and away season of 22-rounds, and an unprecedented 198% growth in memberships across the league. Playing the opening round in mostly major stadia was part of a strategy to create new experiences and connect with more fans, and we are delighted to see the round record broken on day one, in just two matches.”
