The two eternal enemies of Greek football are preparing for their first meeting of the 2023/24 season, with huge stakes as each side looks to strengthen their title credentials.

Olympiacos hosts bitter rivals Panathinaikos at “Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium on Monday morning (AEDT) in the Greek Super League’s eighth round, in what will be a tough contest between first and second.

The “Trifylli” will be incredibly motivated to earn an upset at their Reds’ home ground, knowing that a victory would bring them level on points with the league leaders.

The Piraeus giants, meanwhile, will be boosted by the thought of extending their lead over the Greens to six points in the event of a win, making this clash even more exciting that it already is.

PAOK is aiming to pounce on dropped points in the round’s headline fixture by beating Atromitos at “Toumba” Stadium.

The Thessaloniki outfit currently sits two points behind Panathinaikos and five behind Olympiacos, meaning that success is a minimum in their match with the struggling Peristeriotes (who are still winless).

Similarly, AEK, who is equal on points with PAOK, will be striving to down Asteras Tripolis in their away game as they look to build up their momentum in the league.

AEK have not performed at their absolute best in the Hellenic championship thus far, something they will hope to change coming out of the latest international break.

OFI looks to keep their good form going as they travel to play Kifisia, the Cretans hoping for another triumph to protect their spot in fifth place.

Aris makes the trip to face a high-flying Panserraikos side that has gone unbeaten in their past five outings on Sunday morning, with the “yellow-blacks” needing to earn maximum points after a very inconsistent start to their campaign sees them currently in eighth position.

Panetolikos and Volos go head-to-head in what is a major contest for the two clubs, each still striving for their first win of the season.

The teams come into the game as the bottom-placed teams, the hosting Agrinio side currently ahead with a single point, and victory is now well and truly a must for both outfits who now are trying to escape the relegation zone.

Lamia takes on Giannina at “Athanasios Diakos” ground in the round opener on Saturday morning and the Fthiotida team will have their sights set on extending their opponents’ winless streak.

The Epirutans have gone seven games in all competitions without a victory, a run which they will hope to end this weekend against a well-performing Lamia side that is currently seventh on the ladder.
