Formula One great Michael Schumacher is paralysed and still has trouble with speech and memory, according to his friend and former formula one driver Philippe Streiff.

Streiff was paralysed and remains in a wheelchair after suffering a serious injury in pre-season training in Brazil in 1989.

“It’s very difficult. He can’t speak. Like me, he is in a wheelchair, paralysed. He has memory problems and speech problems,” Streiff is reported to have told French radio.

Little information has been released on Schumacher’s condition after he was discharged from Lausanne Hospital in Switzerland for rehabilitation.

He is being cared for at home by his wife and private hospital staff.

Schumacher’s spokeswoman Sabine Kehm would not confirm or deny Streiff’s comments, saying only that “he did not have contact with us” and that the comments were “his opinions”.

Schumacher was seriously injured in skiing accident in December 29, 2013 after he went off course, hitting his head and shattering his helmet in two.
