In commemoration of the 1973 student uprising, the Language & Culture Schools of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM Schools) will release a special edition on November 19 titled “Polytechnic 50 years later.”
The collaborative effort involves students and educators from GCM’s educational units, presenting individual and group projects.
These projects are part of the ongoing initiatives throughout the year in honour of the 50th anniversary of the students’ uprising against the Dictatorship in Greece.

The special edition, encompassing literary works, poetry, era testimonies, interviews, songs, presentations, and discussions, serves as a platform for educators to impart the events’ significance and educate students on the values of democracy, freedom, and the importance of defending them.
Maria Bakalidou, Principal of GCM schools, highlighted the commitment to shaping Greek identity through an understanding of Greek culture and history.
“Integrating these actions into the curriculum aims to showcase the example of young individuals opposing oppression and authoritarianism while pursuing ideals and dreams,” she noted.
The special edition will be distributed free of charge to all students in participating school units and will also be available at the GCM offices for those interested.
