The Greek-Cypriot-Australian practice KYRIAKOS TSOLAKIS ARCHITECTS is set to present itself on the world stage as it competes against some of the most renowned architectural firms across the globe.
The firm has been named a finalist in the 16th edition of the World Architecture Festival, running from November 29-December 1 at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, in the ‘Future Projects’ category for their Cypriot project titled ‘Resort AIR’.
Two of the firm’s partners, Elena K. Tsolakis and Cassandra K. Tsolakis, will present their proposal live in Singapore in front of festival high-profile delegates and international esteemed judging panels, consisting of renowned architects, industry experts and their peers.
They are among esteemed company in this category (which celebrates the most inspiring future architectural projects), going up against practices like Zaha Hadid Architects, BIG, Grimshaw, UNStudio, MAD Architects and Foster + Partners.
The World Architecture Festival represents the world’s largest international architectural and live judged awards event dedicated to celebrating architectural excellence and sharing the most inspiring architectural projects from across the globe.
The firm earned its place in the prestigious event for its project ‘Resort AIR’, a 150-room hotel in Troodos, Cyprus that establishes its mountainous location as an integral part, allowing it to cascade through its volumes.
The design intends to sit in harmony within its context and aims to be the first mass-timber building construction on the island.
This represents a major achievement for the firm that was established in Melbourne by Kyriakos N. Tsolakis in 1973.
The practice is now run by his three children Elena, Cassandra and Nicodemos, with their head office in Nicosia.
Elena and Cassandra boast a considerable educational and career background in the field, graduating from Melbourne University with their first architecture degrees before continuing their studies and work in the U.K.
Some of the current major projects include The National Star Observatory of Cyprus (Troodos Observatory), a Culinary School & Gastro Park, a New Residential Neighbourhood of eight buildings in Nicosia, a 300-Studio Student Housing Development as well as Office buildings in London.
