Earlier this month the Art & Language Centre “DIDAS” illuminated the Parish Hall “Hermes” of the Resurrection of Christ in Kogarah to pay homage to the late Iconographer Andreas Georgakopoulos.
A cherished figure in the world of sacred art, Georgakopoulos left a permanent mark through his creation of numerous icons adorning 15 Greek Orthodox Churches across Australia.
The tribute unfolded into the evening with Stella Sorotou leading the proceedings by offering a heartfelt account of the Iconographer’s life and prolific body of work.

Dr. Vasilis Adrachtas then took the stage, providing an insightful theological analysis of Georgakopoulos’s icons, highlighting the profound spiritual significance embedded in each stroke of the brush.
The musical group “Melisma,” directed by Dimitris Koubaroulis, offered the audience a program of traditional songs suitable to the late artists’ sources of inspiration.

In attendance was Constantinos Giannakodimos, the Head of the Public Diplomacy Office of the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney.
His presence underscored the importance of preserving and perpetuating artistic traditions.
Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia, conveyed the blessings of Archbishop Makarios of Australia while Bishop Christodoulos emphasised the “paramount role of Byzantine Art within the Greek Orthodox Church”, recognising it as “a profound channel for spiritual expression and connection”.
