The Foundation for Greek Studies of the University of NSW (UNSW) has expressed support for the preservation of the program at Macquarie University, stressing the importance of their existence at the tertiary level.
The Foundation’s Board of Directors held a meeting recently to discuss many items of relevance, and they came out of it with four announcements.
They first wanted to welcome and congratulate Dr Vassilis Adrahtas on his appointment as the new Head of the Greek Studies Program at UNSW, wishing him luck and success in the role, before turning their attention to the subject of Modern Greek at tertiary level.
Reflecting first on the issue currently faced at Macquarie University, the Board expressed its undivided solidarity and support for the continuation of its Modern Greek Studies Program.
They then spoke on the current situation of their own Greek Studies Program, with the reality being that, after 28 years, the Foundation will have to appeal to the Greek community for financial support in order to maintain it.
Their statement states that “this need has arisen due to low interest rates in the last eight years, as well as changes at the university, which have led to increasing costs”.
Their final announcement emphasised once more that the preservation and survival of Modern Greek Studies at all levels of education, not only tertiary, remains a top priority for Hellenism.
