The Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia (GOCSA) is gearing up for its annual Blessing of the Waters event, set to take place on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Henley Beach foreshore in Adelaide.

This celebration, in honour of Epiphany Day, is expected to draw in hundreds of visitors.

The procession, led by the clergy alongside parishioners and esteemed guests, will commence from the jetty’s start at 12 pm.

The symbolic Blessing of the Waters will then transpire at the end of the jetty, with the faithful partaking in the tradition of diving into the waters to retrieve the cross.

In a message to GOCSA, Premier Peter Malinauskas expressed, “On this special occasion, we celebrate the strength and unity of the spiritual ties that bind the Greek diaspora here in our great state and around the world. The Blessing of the Waters ceremony combines the richness of ancient and contemporary Greek traditions and culture. The joyous celebrations that follow showcase the generous hospitality for which our Greek community has been so well known for generations.”

GOCSA President, Peter Gardiakos, reflected on the relevance of the Church’s wish for divine enlightenment. He stressed the reminder that nothing should be taken for granted and that all must unite in defending universal principles and values.

“The never-ending Light of Christianity is a light of love and inclusion without judgment. May the blessings of Epiphany inspire us to navigate the currents of life with faith and resilience,” added Gardiakos.

Post-ceremony, visitors can enjoy a traditional Greek Festival featuring dance performances, live music by the local band ‘Kerasma Live,’ and delectable Greek delicacies, including loukoumades (Greek honey puffs).

Hellas Lucas, Chair of the GOCSA Cultural Committee, expressed excitement about the upcoming event.

“The tradition of the Blessing of the Waters, or as we know it, ‘Theofania,’ is such a beautiful event that all South Australians can look forward to,” Lucas said.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the Greek community to showcase our culture, traditions, food, and dance.”

Anticipating a larger turnout this year, the organisers have expanded seating, food options, and entertainment, including a traditional Greek musical program by the local band ‘Kerasma Live’.
