In the early hours of Sunday, a meticulously orchestrated mafia-style attack in Athens claimed the life of a 44-year-old man, known as a prominent figure in Neos Kosmos’ nightlife.
Vangelis Z., the victim, had previously faced accusations of leading an extortion group and narrowly escaped a murder attempt in 2018.
Law enforcement deems the murder significant, marking a grim development in the ongoing conflicts within the local nightlife scene. The assailants, traveling in an SUV, ambushed Vangelis at the intersection of Frantzi and Ilias Iliou streets, showering his car with a deadly hail of gunfire, resulting in his instant demise.
Adding a layer of mystery to the incident, the attackers’ vehicle was found completely incinerated on Athens Avenue in Haidari, western Athens. Authorities draw connections to a foiled plot against the victim in June, involving a van loaded with weapons.
As investigations unfold, the city grapples with the repercussions of this targeted attack, shedding light on the complex web of conflicts and vendettas within the Athenian nightlife.
