Another veteran of the diaspora press has left us for the eternal journey.
George Iakovidis, a guardian in Greece, excelled as a publisher of diaspora newspapers in Melbourne, working as a journalist and layout designer.
Among other roles, he worked at Neos Kosmos and in newspapers owned by Theo Skalkos.
The news of his death was announced by Panagiotis Iassonidis with the following post:
“THE ‘GUARDIAN’ GEORGE IAKOVIDIS HAS PASSED AWAY,” Iassonidis captioned a photo, adding:
“‘Love you, Panagiotis’ were the last words I heard from the late George Iakovidis. And a little while ago, his son Nikolaos informed me that his father departed for the eternal journey this morning, peacefully, without pain… Until last Saturday when he entered the hospital, he had never had any health problems. He had not even taken an aspirin. From Saturday onwards, gradually, calmly, and systematically, without complications, one by one, his organs began to surrender at the age of 91… full of days. A former policeman, a graduate of Gymnasium and the School of Guardians, a dynamic journalist and layout designer in all diaspora newspapers, he served various (Greek Australian) community organisations selflessly, tirelessly, patriotically, and with philotimo. A few years ago, he lost his beloved wife Anna, a tremendous loss for George. He leaves behind two sons, Nikolaos and Stavros. His memory will be eternal. May God rest his soul.
‘I love you too, George.'”
