The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) has announced the inaugural Juniors and Women’s Greek Community Cup, off the back of two successful men’s tournaments.

These new tournaments will take place in September at the fields of Oakleigh Cannons FC, and promise to be a spectacle of talent, passion and community spirit.

After two men’s tournaments that saw South Melbourne FC win in 2023 and Oakleigh Cannons win this year, the GCM will now present a women’s and juniors cup.

Cannons General Manager Aki Ionnas says it’s a privilege to be hosting these tournaments.

“We are truly honoured to have been chosen as the host for the 2024 Juniors and Women’s Greek Community Cup,” he said in a media release.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the GCM for granting us this opportunity and we commend them for their incredible initiative.

“We eagerly anticipate welcoming both tournaments and are excited about the prospect of engaging with the broader community.”

GCM President Bill Papastergiadis OAM shared his excitement while also emphasising the significance of the new events.

“The GCM is appreciative of Oakleigh’s Cannons FC’s offer to host those tournaments,” he said.

“Engagement at all levels with our youth is particularly important for us as is the Inaugural Women’s Cup.

He said the community is committed to diversity, and a forward-looking vision for the future.

“The GCM is committed to working with our youth and broadening our educational platform through these tournaments. Get ready to witness history in the making.”

Principal of the GCM Schools Maria Bakalidou said that youth will benefit greatly from this tournament that celebrates inclusivity and empowers youth and women.

Vice President of GCM Michael Karamitos said it is another chance for the Greek community to come together through sport, while Dr Nick Dallas, the GCM Head of Educational Program echoed the same sentiment.

“Actively promoting inclusive sporting competitions not only fosters community building and engagement, but also enhances the socialisation skills of the participants as their mental and physical well-being,” he said.

“The beautiful game is meant for everyone to enjoy. This September promises to be a month of unforgettable moments”.
