The Annual General assembly of the Greek Community of Melbourne was held at Alphington Grammar on Sunday afternoon.
Despite limited member participation, the atmosphere was constructive and civilised.
President Bill Papastergiadis delivered a detailed report on the organisation’s activities, explaining the new Hub on Russell Street, a center being created by the Community, and discussing the operation of the Greek National Tourism Organisation offices at the Greek Centre.
Members extensively discussed the issue of Greek language proficiency and the revision of the Community’s constitution.

Treasurer Marinis Pyrpyris provided a detailed report on the Community’s assets this year, justifying the figures presented.
Several members, including Varvara Ioannou, Kostas Dimaras, Apostolos Kounelis, Theodoros Markou, and Chris Papadopoulos, expressed their views on various issues concerning the organisation and the community.

Notable decisions included Kostas Karamarkos withdrawing his proposal to name the library of the Greek Cultural Centre “Andreas Papandreou Library” to avoid division among members.
The members also rejected proposals to name it “Mikis Theodorakis Library” and “Andreas Papandreou-Mikis Theodorakis.”

President Papastergiadis expressed satisfaction with the civilised discussion and thanked members for their participation and valuable input.
The AGM of the Cypriot Community members is scheduled to take place shortly.

Detailed reports on the activities of both assemblies will be published in Neos Kosmos Thursday’s edition and immediately on their website.
