The remarkable results of Sydney’s HSC students of Modern and Classical Greek were put under the spotlight this past weekend, with their achievements being celebrated among friends, family and special guests at the Dionysios Solomos Awards Ceremony.
The event was held on Sunday March 3 at the MacLaurin Hall of the University of Sydney as part of the Greek Festival of Sydney, recognising the highest-achieving Modern and Classical Greek HSC students in 2023.
The awards ceremony, organised by the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW, featured a number of speeches in addition to its awards presentations from numerous notable guests.

The speakers included Ioannis Mallikourtis, Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Mark Buttigieg, NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Industrial Relations, for Work Health and Safety, for Multiculturalism, Dr Anthony Dracopoulos, Associate Professor of Modern Greek at the University of Sydney and Artemis Theodoris-Papoutsis.
Another speech was delivered by Arlane Moisidis, on behalf of the students, who herself finished first in Modern Greek Extension and was presented with her award along with her peers by Mr Buttigieg.

Ianna Fatouros finished first in Modern Greek Beginners, with her and the other recipients being presented with their awards by Nia Karteris, Chair of the Greek Festival of Sydney.
Epida Getsiou placed in top position for Modern Greek Continuers, with the recipients in this subject being presented their awards by Mr Mallikourtis.

The recipients for both Classical Greek Continuers and Extension in attendance were presented with their awards by Professor Vrasidas Karalis, the Chair of the Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies Department at USYD.
The first-placed students in attendance were also presented with congratulatory gifts for their outstanding achievements by Maria Glekias, President of the Association Vorion Dimon Spartis “Orea Eleni” and George Vithoulkas, President of the Zakynthian Association of Sydney and NSW.

In addition to this, there was a presentation of awards for the students who earned Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Modern Greek by Peter Ronis, Managing Director of Ronis Real Estate Bankstown and the Event Sponsor for the Dionysios Solomos Awards.

The community also recognised the 2023 HSC High Achievers from its Greek afternoon schools, with these students being presented with awards by Ms Thedoris-Papoutsis.
The event, which was supported by the NSW Education Standards Authority and presented in partnership with the University of Sydney, was emceed by Con Apoifis.
