The fate of the championship is now firmly in the hands of AEK after they soundly defeated Panathinaikos to go four points clear, putting them in pole position to secure their second straight premiership.
Enosi beat the “Trifylli” 3-0 at “Agia Sophia” Stadium on Thursday morning (AEST) in the seventh round of the Greek Super League play-offs, gaining a massive advantage in the title race as a result.
The match started perfectly for AEK as they went in front just seven minutes in through winger Niclas Eliasson.
The Greens then handed their opponents a second goal after a failed pass backwards from centre half Samet Akaydin was latched onto by striker Ezequiel Ponce, with the Argentinean finishing the ball into the bottom right (38′).
Eliasson then put the game to bed with another strike in the 68th minute, polishing off a fantastic evening that has now made AEK the absolute favourites to finish as league winners.
PAOK suffered a major blow to their title charge after dropping crucial points against Lamia, drawing 1-1 at “Athanasios Diakos” ground to effectively take themselves out of the title race.
The Fthiotida side managed to take the lead towards the end of the first half, thanks to a strike from midfielder Vykintas Slivka (45+4′).
The hosts held firm at the back before the momentum shifted following a red card to substitute Pedro Amaral (90′), with Slivka (who had been subbed off at this point) also being sent off as a result of protesting the decision.
Defeat loomed large over the Thessaloniki giants, though they found an equaliser right at the death when winger Kiril Despodov’s cross was headed in by midfielder Stefan Schwab (90+10′).
The result is a brutal hit to PAOK’s premiership chances with them now needing victories in all their remaining matches as well as other results going their way.
Olympiacos, similarly, has seemingly seen their title hopes go up in flames after drawing 1-1 with Aris at “Kleanthis Vikelidis” Stadium.
The “yellow-blacks” went ahead in the 48th minute via a goal from marksman Loren Moron, though their lead was short-lived as winger Gelson Martins brought it level again just five minutes later.
This proved the final decisive moment of the contest, putting Olympiacos eight points behind AEK and all but ending their chances of winning the league.
