Sydney FC has further cemented their status as the most successful club in the A-League Women after downing premiers Melbourne City to win their fifth championship.

The Sky Blues downed City 0-1 in the Grand Final on Saturday evening in front of more than 7,500 fans at AAMI Park, officially becoming the first side to win five championships in the process.

The extremely hard-fought battle was split by a lone strike in the 69th minute courtesy of forward Shea Hastings Connors, which helped her side retain the championship from last season as well as earn their fifth trophy in the past four campaigns.

The victory holds even symbolic importance for Sydney FC as the trophy now sees them go past Melbourne City’s record of four championships, meaning they now are the most decorated A-League Women team in both premierships and championships.

Sydney FC midfielder Mackenzie Hawkesby was recognised as player of the match for the grand final which capped off another stellar A-League Women season.

A-Leagues Commissioner Nick Garcia congratulated Sydney FC for their triumph in the final as well as Melbourne City, who finished the campaign as the premiers.

“Both teams have been the standout all season and we saw that on display with an exciting and tense finale,” Garcia said.

The A-Leagues Commissioner further praised the growing support of the fans, whose increased interest this term saw the competition achieve record crowds, memberships and TV views.

“A huge thanks to the fans for their continued support of our game – as this month the Liberty A-League Women became the most attended season, of any women’s sport, in Australia ever,” he said.

“We can’t wait for an even bigger season in 2024-25.”
