The Board of Directors of the Fairfield-based Seniors and Caregivers Association unveiled an emotional photo exhibition, depicting their journey from their homeland to the Antipodes on five canvases last Thursday.

The event moved everyone in attendance with an exhibition spanning a nostalgic and poignant 60-year journey, highlighting the community’s origins and achievements.

Northcote MP Kat Theophanous and Darebin Councilor Emily Dimitriadis inaugurated the exhibition.

“This exhibition honors our grandparents and parents who traveled miles away under adverse conditions and preserved our culture and traditions. I am glad to see the continuation of this heritage in the hearts of our children,” said Theophanous.

In her speech, Secretary Eugenia Orfanou highlighted the support the Association has received from both the State Government and Darebin Council, which promotes multicultural events.

President Dora Nikolopoulou praised Orfanou for the original idea and thanked the members for their participation in the exhibition.

The five canvases are themed as follows:

  • “Where We Came From”
  • “Why We Left”
  • “The Journey South”
  • “The First Migration”
  • “What We Achieved”

The Association, operating for the past nine years, is housed at the Community Center on Station Street. During my visit, I observed the members enjoying their time together with coffee and conversation.

The photographic material collected by the active members is a journey through time.

For now, the exhibition will be housed in the “Democritus” hall on High Street in Northcote, but it deserves a permanent home.
