This year’s Memorial and Protest Events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion in Cyprus and the illegal occupation of 37 per cent of Cypriot territory will feature the presence of the Commissioner of the Citizen of the Republic of Cyprus, Panayiotis Palates, accompanied by the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus, Antonis Sammoutis.
To coordinate the program, an Executive Committee meeting was held last Friday at the Cyprus Community House.
The main event, known for its broad community participation, will take place on Sunday, July 21, at 2:00 PM in Federation Square.
The events are supported by numerous community organisations, business leaders, and friends of Cyprus, as highlighted by TheoTheofanous.
The program includes raising the Cypriot flag at Federation Square, wreath laying, a minute of silence, national anthems, speeches in Greek and English by state legislators and community leaders, hymns, and an artistic program featuring patriotic songs.
Renowned Cypriot singer Marios Charalambous will perform, commemorating the island’s 50-year struggle.
Recognising the sovereign Republic of Cyprus, the Australian government, the United Nations, and the European Union reject the illegal regime in the north (known as the TRNC) and any misinformation or propaganda against the legitimate authority.
Under the slogan “We Do Not Forget,” the peaceful gathering invites families and individuals to participate.
Parking is available at Federation Square via Russell Street, with easy access from Flinders Street Station by train.
Bus services will depart at 12.30pm from various community centers across Melbourne.
