On July 14, during the Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the Fourth Ecumenical Council, Archbishop Makarios of Australia officiated at the Holy Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in Northbridge, Perth.
Makarios crossed the threshold of Western Australia’s first Greek Orthodox Church, exactly one hundred years after its establishment, greeted warmly by the Parish Administration and members.
Father Eleftherios Gerovasileios, the Vicar General, marked this significant day by presenting symbolic gifts to Archbishop Makarios and Bishops Elpidios and Evmenios.
Following the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Makarios reflected on the parish’s centennial, highlighting the foundational significance of Metropolitan Kyriakos Christophoros’s stone-laying, a few months after assuming his role as Hierarch in Australia. This milestone binds the Parish’s history closely with the broader progress of the Archdiocese, also celebrating its centennial this year.
In conclusion, Archbishop Makarios praised Archbishop Elpidios of Perth for his dedicated ministry and Bishop Evmenios for his inspiring sermon.
He also commended the Choir of the Christian Association of Sydney for their performance during the Divine Liturgy hymns.
The anniversary celebration concluded with a formal meal, fostering deeper connections within the community.
Archbishop Makarios urged the parishioners and broader Greek Orthodox community of Western Australia to uphold unity and love, remaining steadfast in their faith.
The event was attended by dignitaries including Governor Chris Dawson, State Minister Tony Buti, representing the Premier, Liberal Party Leader Elizabeth Mettam, and Consul General of Greece in Perth, Georgia Karasiotou.
