The ‘Week of the Anargyri’, dedicated to the patron saints of the Sts Anargiri Greek Language Centre in Oakleigh, this year coincided with the start of the 2024 Olympic Games, offering both educational, culturally engaging and athletic experiences for students.

Students had the opportunity to learn about the lives and contributions of the Patron Saints of the Church through a brief talk by Father Stavros.

The event included a moment of reverence, where students venerated the holy icon and relics of the Saints Anargyri—an important and solemn act in the Orthodox Christian faith.

In addition to the religious observances, students participated in various activities that introduced them to the history and symbols of the Olympic Games.

These activities allowed students to embody the spirit of the Olympics, experiencing firsthand the values of ancient Greek athletics, such as noble competition, teamwork, and selfless participation.

The week concluded with students crafting olive wreaths, or “kotinos,” as a symbol of their participation.

In ancient times, the kotinos—a wreath made from an olive branch—was awarded to victors of the Olympic Games.

Through this activity, students connected the olive tree with the history of the Olympics and the broader significance of sports, recognising its enduring importance to the Greek people.
