Despite not winning a match at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, beach volleyball athlete Mark Nicolaidis cannot help but look back at his debut experience with a smile on his face.

The 23-year-old Queenslander, alongside his teammate Izac Carracher, was the second youngest Australian male beach volleyball team ever.

But while he did not see any success he’ll never forget his first experience at the Olympics.

“It was the most incredible couple of weeks in my life,” the Greek Aussie told Neos Kosmos.

“It was overwhelming at times with how much was going on but it’s safe to say I wouldn’t change a thing.

“Playing in arguably the best stadium that’s ever existed is a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

But it wasn’t just competing that Mark found joy in.

“Off-court was just as amazing, going to watch other sports and support the bigger Australian team. I made countless new friendships that will last a lifetime.”

“Representing your country at the pinnacle global sporting event is something you cannot not smile about. I’m incredibly proud of my achievements.”

This first taste of Olympic competition has only made Mark hungrier, and he is determined to put in the work to get there again in four years.

“As soon as I stepped off the court in my final game I just wanted to fast forward four years into the future.”

He said his “motivation and hunger levels are through the roof”.

“I would love to come back in LA 2028 and win a medal.”

He is already putting in the work. Since the Games he’s been training in Italy for his next tournament in Germany before taking some time off to plan what’s next.
