This year marks the 80th anniversary of the destruction of the Jewish communities of Rhodes and the other Dodecanese islands, a dark chapter in human history that reflects the resilience and tragedy experienced by the Jews of Greece. While the majority of the Jewish community of Salonika perished during the Holocaust, the entire community of Zakynthos was spared. However, the Jewish community of Rhodes was nearly obliterated.
In an effort to honour and remember those who suffered, a special evening will be hosted at Emanuel Synagogue, featuring a reading of Torn Apart by War. A play, written by Vic Alhadeff, delves into story of a couple whose lives were torn asunder by the horrors of the Holocaust. Alhadeff’s inspiration for the work stems from his own family history, particularly his father’s agonizing journey from Rhodes, making the play deeply personal and evocative.
The reading will be brought to life a cast that includes Joanna Weinberg, Geoff Sirmai, Tony Sloman, and Liz Hovey. The evening will conclude with a musical performance and a taste of Greek culture through traditional food, providing a moment of reflection and community.
The event is supported by the Consulate General of Greece, with Consul General Mr. Yannis Mallikourtis set to attend, underscoring the importance of this remembrance. It promises to be an evening of deep reflection, cultural connection, and historical remembrance, ensuring that the stories of Rhodes and its people are not forgotten.
The event will take place at Emanuel Synagogue, 7 Ocean St, Woollahra NSW 2025, on Sunday, 15 September 2024, from 5pm to 6.30pm AEST.
