Stefanos Tsitsipas has withdrawn from next week’s Davis Cup due to injury.
Greece is set to face Serbia in Belgrade but will be without its top star as he has been dealing with a back injury that has affected his performances recently.
The world No.11 took to social media, posting a statement announcing he won’t be playing.
“Dear friends and supporters of the National Tennis Team. The voice of my heart advised me to strengthen the National Team once again. However, the voice of my body, in an imperative manner, forbids me to compete in the meeting with Serbia for the Davis Cup,” he said in the Hellenic Tennis Federation statement.
“It is with great regret that I announce my decision not to compete next week in Belgrade. I keep the moments we experienced last February in Ano Liosia. Then, drawing strength from the Greek fans who were in the stands, we defeated Romania and celebrated together a great success in World Group I of the Davis Cup.”
He then wished the national team good luck against Serbia and said he will do his best to return for Greece’s next match.
With Novak Djokovic representing Serbia, it looks like it will be a difficult task for Greece, with the absence of Tsitsipas, the country’s top ranked player.
None of Greece’s other men’s players are ranked inside the top 500 yet.
