“Hellas” has lost a big figure from its family after it was announced that former player and coach John Margaritis passed away at the age of 87.
The South Melbourne legend passed away on Wednesday 11 September, the same day when the club fought its way into the 2024 Australia Cup semi-finals.
Margaritis had a storied career with “Hellas” during his seven-year tenure (1961-1967) as he played roughly 100 league games and scored 23 goals, contributing heavily to their four VSL championships in 1962, 1964, 1965 and 1966.

“(Margaritis) was a key figure during his seven years with Hellas, leaving a lasting impact on the club. The impact includes being both a member of the club’s Hall of Fame and Team of the Century,” the club said in a social media post.
“He was also a beloved coach, admired by players and coaches alike, including Ange Postecoglou. His influence extended across the Victorian Football Community and was an idol for many across the Greek-Australian community, where he was a true inspiration.”

The club noted that Margaritis supported the club’s men’s and women’s teams for many years, with his granddaughter Alanah winning a championship with “Hellas” and his daughter Gabrielle Giuliano being a pioneer for the game in Victoria and leading the team for a decade.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his daughter, our Vice President Gabrielle Giuliano, and her family. Rest in peace, Giannelo,” the post concluded.
