The two “eternal enemies” of Greek football were unable to procure bragging rights over the other as they were forced to settle for a stalemate, while PAOK is back on top following AEK’s costly loss to Panetolikos.
Panathinaikos and Olympiacos played out a 0-0 draw at the Olympic Stadium on Monday morning (AEDT) in what is an unsatisfying result for both clubs, who each would have loved to have gotten the win.
The match was there for the taking with chances afforded to each side, though some resolute and sometimes desperate defending as well as important interventions from each goalkeeper ensured the game remained scoreless.
The Greens suffered a setback with the injury of captain Fotis Ioannidis in the first half, with the first assessment suggesting he will be be ruled out for the next two-three weeks and so could potentially miss out on Greece’s upcoming qualifiers.
The result also means the “Trifylli” is now seven points off of first place, which will no doubt be a major concern they will hope to address after the international break.
PAOK has clawed its way back into top spot after scoring a tough 0-2 away success against Levadiakos.
The game proved challenging for the Thessaloniki giants and they nearly found themselves behind in the 70th minute when the “blue-greens” was awarded a penalty, with striker Guillermo Balzi hitting the post to squander the golden opportunity to score.
PAOK made them pay for their mistake as midfielder Mady Camara put them ahead in the 86th minute, and Stefan Schwab put the game to bed by scoring a spot-kick of his own in injury time (90+2′).
Asteras Tripolis is up and running under Claude Makelele’s watch after winning 1-3 away against Kallithea.
The Arcadians pulled ahead in the 19th minute via forward Julian Bartolio, and the match seemed to fall into place for them when Kallithea striker Theirry Rua Moutinho received a straight red (28′).
The hosts remarkably brought it back on level terms when forward Elia Giani converted a penalty (45+4′).
The visitors eventually regained the lead as winger Nikolaos Kaltsas found the back of the net (71′) before new signing Federico Macheda managed to score on his club debut to secure the points (77′).
OFI climbed into sixth place following a 2-3 away triumph over Panserraikos.
The Cretans stormed into a two-goal lead after scoring twice through centre half Bressan (8′) and winger Thiago Nuss (26′), though the Serres team nullified it with efforts from striker Jefte Betancor (28′) and midfielder Mohamed Fares (45′).
The second half proved far more compact than the first, though it still produced a goal in the 89th minute as forward Taxiarchis Fountas scored from the penalty spot to give OFI the win.
AEK suffered a shock 0-1 away upset at the hands of Panetolikos on Sunday morning to deliver Enosi their first league defeat of the campaign.
The Agrinio side held strong in defence to keep the visitors at bay and they eventually went ahead themselves in the 73rd minute when wing back Charalambos Mavrias found midfielder Miguel Luis in the box, who then directed the ball into the net.
Aris kept their good run of form intact with a strong 2-0 home win over Lamia to cement their place towards the top of the table for another week.
The Thessaloniki side opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the clash, thanks to a free kick header from marksman Loren Moron.
The Spaniard then sealed his brace with a long-range effort in the 43rd minute, leading his team to their third straight success in the process.
Volos earned an important 1-2 away triumph against Atromitos to earn their first three points since the second round.
The Peristeriotes went ahead first in the 41st minute through midfielder Denzel Jubilana, though the complexion of the contest changed completely right before the break when centre half Franz Brorsson was sent off following a VAR check (45+6′).
The Magnesia outfit capitalised on the advantage in the second period with two goals minutes apart from one another, getting level via Nemanja Glavcic (66′) before going in front outright quickly after through striker Mark Koszta (68′).
Glavcic received a second yellow card in the 76th minute to make it 10 vs 10, but Volos managed to hold tight onto the result.
