Dr Sam Liveriadis will celebrate a milestone birthday this year, by participating in his 10th full Melbourne Marathon on Sunday, October 13. The event, marking Sam’s 64th birthday, is more than just another personal achievement – it’s also an opportunity to give back to the community.
This year, the local runner and chiropractor has set an ambitious fundraising goal of $5,000 for one of his favorite charities, St. Mary’s House of Welcome in Fitzroy.
The charity provides essential services for homeless people in Melbourne, including meals, showers, clean clothing, and well-being programs. Dr Liveriadis has already raised $1,850 but hopes the community can help him reach his target.
“It’s a huge effort to prepare for a marathon – 42.195 kilometers – but this year, I wanted to make it count for something bigger,” he told Neos Kosmos. “St. Mary’s House of Welcome does incredible work for those in need, and every donation, no matter how small, helps.”
St. Mary’s House of Welcome, founded by the Daughters of Charity in 1960, has been a vital lifeline for Melbourne’s homeless community. Last year alone, the charity provided over 40,000 nutritious meals and 2,600 warm showers for those in need. They also distributed 360 essential items like sleeping bags and tents, offering comfort and safety to vulnerable people.
In addition to providing basic necessities, St. Mary’s also fosters community engagement through well-being and gardening programs, benefiting 550 participants and promoting mental health and creativity.
