So what exactly is the connection between Darwin and Greek literature? Maria Zarimis’ book Darwin’s Footprint has the answer.
An adjunct lecturer in the School of Humanities and Languages at the University of New South Wales, she examines the impact of Darwinism in Greece and investigates how it has shaped Greece’s cultural and intellectual history, namely its literature.
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw Darwinism and associated science strongly influence many Greek literary writers and influential intellectuals.
This fuelled debates in various areas including ‘man’s place in nature’, eugenics, the nature-nurture controversy, religion, as well as class, race and gender.
According to Antonis Liakos, Professor of Contemporary History and History of Historiography at the University of Athens, Maria Zarimis’ book is “a thorough and in-depth analysis of how mainstream Western scientific ideas found their way into the planning of the modern Greek society through the intermediation of literature”.
