The Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales (GOC) has issued a press release condemning “the ongoing aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip and the suburbs of Beirut”.
It mentions Hamas Health Authority numbers of casualties and of more than “40,000 civilians, mainly women and children, and many thousands injured.”
The GOC release condemns the United States who it accuses of remaining silent.
“It is unacceptable for the United States of America to remain silent and declare that it will not reduce its military support to Israel.
“This clear indifference by the United States has plunged the entire region into instability with the cost in human lives spiralling out of control.”
The GOC release says that “over 1.9 million people have fled their homes while 50% of buildings in Gaza have been levelled and the area has been deemed uninhabitable by the United Nations.”
The Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales then “expresses its solidarity with the People of Palestine and calls for an immediate end to the war”.
It goes further and calls for the creation of “a truly independent and viable Palestinian State on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, and the return of refugees to their homes based on the relevant UN resolutions, as well as the release of all prisoners and from both sides”.
“The two peoples Israeli and Palestinian can live in peace and prosperity next to each other each in their own homeland.”
Whilst the GOC release does not mention the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack resulting in the death of 1200 Israelis, and the 250 Israeli hostages taken it “condemns any incitement of racial hatred and anti-Semitism against Israelis or Palestinians.”
