Rebetika is often called the Greek blues since, like the blues, it grew out of an urban subculture and reflected the harsh realities of an oppressed subculture’s lifestyle.
Stories of love, loss, drugs, and refugees are told through the rebetika songs, which convey a storm of emotion.
Join Achilles Yiangoulli, Nick Koutsaliotis, Con Kalamaras and Illias Chatziemmanouil every fortnight at The Retreat Hotel (280 Sydney Road) in Brunswick, and experience the unique Greek blues.
The live performances will take place every second Friday from 9.00pm until midnight.
