Nick Dondas, a long-serving Northern Territory politician and community leader, was honoured at a state memorial service on Monday at Christ Church Cathedral in Darwin.

Dondas, who passed away in September at the age of 84, was celebrated for his decades of public service and lasting contributions to the NT.

Representing Casuarina in the NT Legislative Assembly from 1974 to 1994, Dondas also served as deputy chief minister and later represented the Northern Territory in the federal House of Representatives from 1996 to 1998.

During his tenure, he held key portfolios in health, community development, and transport, playing a vital role in shaping the region’s infrastructure and services.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro highlighted his instrumental role in advancing higher education in the NT, particularly through the establishment of the Menzies School of Health Research.

“He supported the creation of a university in the Northern Territory, shaping the educational landscape for generations,” she said.

Known as the “father of Marrara,” Dondas was pivotal in developing the Marrara sporting precinct, a cornerstone of Darwin’s community life.

His commitment extended to rugby union, where he was a founding figure in the NT Rugby Union Committee, helping to establish a six-club competition and securing a home for the sport in Marrara.

Beyond politics, Dondas was deeply embedded in Darwin’s Greek community.

Lilliane Gomatis, speaking on behalf of the Greek Orthodox community, remembered his integral role in founding the Rapid Creek Greek school and his unwavering presence at the Glenti Festival, where he volunteered for over three decades.

“He was always there, even at the Glenti earlier this year—selling raffle tickets and supporting his community,” Gomatis said.

At the memorial, Dondas’s family shared their tributes to him.

His daughter, Katrina O’Connor, spoke of his love for family.

“He truly was a larger-than-life character, and his legacy of service and love will live on in our hearts and minds,” she said.

Granddaughters Zara, Anastasia, and Coco O’Connor also paid tribute, reflecting on Dondas’s optimistic spirit and his deep compassion for others.

Nick Dondas leaves behind a legacy defined by dedication, resilience, and a profound impact on both the Northern Territory and its diverse communities.
