In a world defined by complex global challenges, Dr Angelia Grant stands out as a beacon of intellect, empathy, and resolve. As Australia’s G20 Sherpa, she navigates the intricate dynamics of international diplomacy, shaping discussions on some of humanity’s most pressing issues.

This year, Dr Grant has inspired audiences on multiple occasions. At the HACCI International Women’s Day event in March, HACCI Board Chair Fotini Kypraios described her as a woman who “engages with power on such a level.”

On Tuesday, 26 November, she returned to Melbourne as a guest speaker for a conversation with mentor and connector Penny Sahinis.

Hosted by Women’s Network Australia at Lander & Rogers law firm, the event drew 85 women, many traveling interstate to hear Dr Grant.

Despite landing in Melbourne at 1am after attending the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Brazil, Dr Grant’s presence captivated the room.

Cheryl Gray, CEO of Women’s Network Australia, set the tone for the event, saying, “We are incredibly fortunate to have Dr Grant here with us given her workload and the global significance of her work.”

A career in service

Dr Grant’s career spans decades in public service. She has served as Chief of Staff to a Parliamentary Secretary, economic adviser to two former Prime Ministers, and Alternate Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Holding a PhD in Economics from the Australian National University, she now leads the Multilateral Economic Engagement Division in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Dr Grant’s professional journey is intertwined with her mentorship connection to Penny Sahinis.

Their bond began during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2021, with Dr Grant in Washington D.C. representing Australia at the IMF and Sahinis in Brisbane.

Their virtual mentoring sessions provided mutual support during a time of isolation and global upheaval, including the January 6 riots in the U.S. and the onset of the war in Ukraine.

The role of a G20 Sherpa

The G20 Sherpa plays a critical role in behind-the-scenes diplomacy, resolving conflicts, negotiating policies, and preparing for the annual summit. Dr Grant likens the position to that of Himalayan Sherpas guiding climbers to great heights. In a field traditionally dominated by men, she embodies inclusive leadership, proving that strength and grace can coexist.

The G20 represents 85 per cent of global GDP, 75 per cent of international trade, and 80 per cent of the world’s population.

Each year, its presidency tackles critical global issues. In 2024, Brazil held the presidency, and South Africa will take over in 2025.

Leading with compassion

Dr Grant’s leadership philosophy is rooted in collaboration and compassion.

“It’s not about being right,” she told the audience.

“We have to be more open, more collaborative, and more willing to admit when someone else’s point is better. It’s about finding solutions together.”

A passionate advocate for gender equality, Dr Grant highlighted the launch of the G20 Empowering Women Working Group, emphasising the need for amplifying women’s voices in international policy discussions.

Mentorship and connection

During her discussion with Sahinis, Dr Grant credited her mentors for inspiring her to challenge norms and uplift others.

The conversation explored navigating risks, building resilience, and fostering connections.

Dr Grant’s message was clear: honesty, humility, and compassion are tools to build a better world.

The audience left feeling empowered and inspired by her integrity, humility, and accomplishments.

“What an incredible event! Dr Grant is truly remarkable, with a voice so soft yet so powerful. I am beyond impressed and grateful for the opportunity to hear her speak.”

“We walk away having felt goosebumps and emotions, thinking differently about our world. We walk taller and stronger together,” attendees agreed.
