Vasiliki Vasilopoulou, the mother of Bishop Evmenios of Chora, passed away on Friday, 27 December at the age of 79 in Melbourne. Her death has left a deep void in the Greek Orthodox community and among her family and friends.
Born in the village of Leontari, Boeotia, Greece, Vasiliki emigrated to Australia in 1965 at the age of 20. She settled in Melbourne, where she and her husband Ioannis raised a devoted Christian family, nurturing their three children—Anna, Sotirios, and Bishop Evmenios—with the principles of Hellenism and Orthodox faith.

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia has expressed its sorrow over her passing. Archbishop Makarios of Australia extended his deepest condolences to Bishop Evmenios and the family. The Archbishop also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Vasiliki’s soul and extended support to her husband, children, and relatives during this difficult time.
The funeral service for Vasiliki Vasilopoulou will take place on Saturday, 4 January 2025, at 10.30am at the “Axion Esti” Monastery in Northcote, Melbourne. Her burial will follow at the Fawkner Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Cultural Centre of Chora, honouring Vasiliki’s lasting legacy.
Bishop Evmenios shared his grief on social media, writing: “With faith in the Resurrection and eternal life, I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Vasiliki, who departed to the Lord on Friday, 27 December 2024. We trust her soul to the love and mercy of our Lord, hoping for the blessed Resurrection and eternal communion with God.”
