A serious crash on Melbourne’s West Gate Freeway at Spotswood caused significant traffic delays on Tuesday, with one motorcyclist left fighting for life and another injured.
The incident occurred around 12.15pm when a gold Toyota allegedly swerved into another lane, forcing a motorbike rider to veer into the path of another motorcyclist, leading to a collision.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, closing four of five outbound lanes before the Williamstown Road exit. One motorcyclist sustained critical injuries and was transported to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, while the other suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the gold Toyota failed to stop, and Victoria Police are now searching for the vehicle. Authorities have urged witnesses or anyone with information on the car’s whereabouts to come forward.
Transport Victoria reported that traffic delays stretched beyond 55 minutes, with congestion backing up past the Bolte Bridge. Motorists heading outbound were advised to detour through Footscray using Footscray Road or Dynon Road, then rejoining via Williamstown Road, Millers Road, or Geelong Road. Those coming from the southeast were advised to avoid the area by taking routes north of the city.
One city-bound lane was also blocked due to emergency service activity at the crash site, further impacting traffic flow until 5pm.
Drivers are urged to remain cautious and check traffic updates before traveling through the area.
