Greece’s new ministers in key portfolios were sworn in at the Presidential Mansion on Saturday, a day after Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ordered a cabinet reshuffle.

The move, in a bid to address his New Democracy party’s declining trend in polls, follows the recent mass protests and a no-confidence vote the government survived last week.

The no-confidence vote was put forward by the opposition over the handling of the deadly Tempi 2023 rail disaster and last week’s mass protests across the country.

According to polls, most Greeks believe the government has tried to cover up the case and protect those responsible for the train crash.

Mitsotakis said during the first cabinet meeting of his new team that the motto of the reshuffle is “faster and bolder”, while government spokesman and deputy minister to the PM, Pavlos Marinakis flagged the cabinet reset as a shift toward younger politicians.

Marinakis, 36, remained in his post, with the younger age ministerial cohort including Domna Michailidou, 37, appointed minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, 41, named minister of National Economy and Finance, and Christos Dimas, 44, announced to serve as minister of Infrastructure and Transport.

One of the new faces in cabinet is Yiannis Loverdos, who will serve as one of the three deputy ministers appointed under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Giorgos Gerapetritis remains minister.

Loverdos who will take over the Greeks Abroad portfolio is a former journalist, editor and director who worked for newspaper outlets, including Kathimerini, To Vima and Proto Thema.

He entered politics in 2014 and was elected MP with New Democracy in 2019 and 2023.

In total, thirteen ministers retained their positions, among them Nikos Dendias at Defence and Adonis Georgiadis as Health minister.

Former minister of Finance and Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras was one of the high-profile departures from ministerial posts.

As was the replacement of Nikos Panagiotopoulos as minister of Immigration and Asylum by Makis Voridis, a hardliner from the party’s right faction.

The reshuffle is the second one since New Democracy won re-election in 2023.

It came a day after Constantine Tassoulas was sworn in as Greece’s new President, replacing Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
