On a sunny Labour Day, on 10 March, members of the PanHellenic Women’s Federation of Australia got together at Melbourne’s Linear Park in Taylors Lakes to rejoice and reflect on what unites them.

The day event was organised to honour International Women’s Day, commemorated globally this year under the theme ‘For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.’

A vasilopita cutting ceremony was also part of the outdoors gathering, with family and friends of the Federation present.

Founded for and by women of Greek background or who have married into a Greek family, the PanHellenic Women’s Federation of Australia operates as a support and social group.

“Each year, our group fundraises for Cancer research and supports individual women in crisis by helping them find the right path to community women’s group’s providers,” Georgina Papafotiou said in a statement to Neos Kosmos.

“There are many women in need of support or assistance. There are many organisations in the community available which women may not be aware of.”

This year’s IWD theme calls for action to unblock equal rights and opportunities for women, with a focus on the next generation as catalysts for change.

Marking the occasion, the PanHellenic Women’s Federation of Australia extended an invitation to any individuals interested in joining their committee or becoming a member.
