A delegation from the Greek Parliament is set to come to Australia for the March 25th celebrations in Sydney.

The visiting MPs will not attend the similar events in Melbourne, which is speculated to be because a delegation had similarly come last year for the Greek Independence Day events but only to the Victorian capital.

The MPs represent the second contingent of Greeks visiting Australia this year that will not go to Melbourne, with 14 members of the Greek Presidential Guard set to attend during the ANZAC Week commemorations.

The Evzones will take part in a series of events in Sydney and Adelaide from 28 April to 4 May, with their participation further highlighting the strong ties between Greece and Australia (particularly through the shared spirit of the ANZACs).

The following was announced regarding the visit of the Greek MPs:

The Greek Parliament will be represented at the celebrations for the National Day of 25 March in Sydney by a group of MPs, namely:

  • Stavros Keletsi, MP of Evros ND (Head of the delegation)
  • Athanasios Papathanasis, MP of Aitoloakarnania ND
  • Stefanos Parastatidis, MP of Kilkis PASOK-KINAL
  • Dr Miltiadis Zambaras, MP of Aitoloakarnania SYRIZA-PS

The MPs will have the opportunity to meet with the Archbishop of Australia, Makarios, prominent members of the Greek community, as well as with state ministers and MPs of Greek origin.

They will hold a press conference with the Greek community media at the Consulate General premises (219-223 Castlereagh St Sydney 2000) on Thursday 27 March, 11am.
