Maria Sakkari has won her opening match at the Miami Open, with a three-set victory over Lucia Bronzetti 3-6, 7-5, 4-6.
The top ranked Greek had a strong service game, notching up ten aces to her Italian opponent’s one.
She also won three of the eight break points she earned while also fighting off six of the eight break points Bronzetti had on her.
The 28th seed will next face third seed American Coco Gauff, just like she did for her second match at the Indian Wells Masters earlier this month.
Gauff got the better of Sakkari on that occasion in straight sets.
In an interview with WTA Insider last month, Sakkari, who is now battling to stay in the Top 30, said she’s as happy as she’s ever been.
She believes the shoulder injury that ended her season after the US Open was her body’s response to the mental and emotional stress built up over the last five years when she surged to become Greece’s first Top 5 player.
Now with a new coaching team and a new outlook on life, she hopes she can stay healthy and lead to new heights in 2025.
