The Ithacan Historical Society are hosting a screening of Jason Raftopoulos’s 2023 film Voices in Deep, followed by a discussion between the director and a practicing artist.

Award-winning director Raftopoulos will speak to Lucy Kostos about his experience as a filmmaker.

Voice in Deep sheds light on the emotional and physical toll of the refugee crisis.

The film is set in the shadow of Greece’s 2015 refugee crisis and centres around two orphaned refugees, brothers Tarek and Zaeed. They have no money or access to work; they sleep on a single bed the older brother pays for by selling his body to middle-aged men working for an abusive pimp, Masi. When a local refugee girl is found murdered, Zaeed, the younger brother, is determined to escape their grim reality—no matter the cost.

When: Sunday April 6, 5.30pm-9pm

Where: Ithaca House, 329 Elizabeth St, Melbourne 3000
