“My mother is innocent.” This is what the daughter of Debbie Voulgaris told the ABC in a report published on Saturday.

The 25-year-old daughter now wants to talk to Neos Kosmos in order, she says, “to let the whole world, especially the Greek community” know that her mother, who is serving a 15-year sentence in Taiwan, is innocent.

Debbie Voulgaris was arrested in late 2023 on drug smuggling charges.

“The pain of being oceans away from my mum, not knowing if she’s okay, not being able to hold her, speak to her freely, or even look her in the eyes … it’s unbearable,” her 25-year-old daughter, Maria, told the ABC.

“She pored every part of herself into raising us with love, with care, with purpose.

“She’s alone, trapped in a place she never deserved to be, carrying pain that was never hers to carry — away from her children.” her daughter said.

Her mother was arrested carrying about 4 kilograms of pure heroin and a smaller amount of cocaine in black plastic bags inside a suitcase at Taoyuan International Airport, about an hour west of the capital Taipei.

She claims that someone else placed the drugs in her suitcase without her knowledge.

Late last October she was sentenced to 16 years in prison, which last week was slightly reduced to 15 years and two months by Taiwan’s Supreme Court on appeal, after which she will be deported.

Now her daughter wants to tell Neos Kosmos the “real story” and the pain this ordeal has caused the family.

More in an upcoming story.
