Cyprus has launched a land and sea search for a Polish tourist who went missing after renting a boat in the western coastal resort city of Paphos, authorities said Wednesday.
The island’s police have asked the public for help locating Piotr Mentel, a 35-year-old Polish national, who has been reported missing since Tuesday.
Police said Mentel rented an inflatable boat from a local water sports facility in Paphos and was last seen departing alone from Latsi marina that morning.
Later on Tuesday, at approximately 4.30 pm, his boat was found adrift and unmanned, roughly 200 metres from shore near the village of Argaka in Paphos district.
The Larnaca Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) said a search and rescue operation was launched Tuesday for the missing man in nearby waters, which continued overnight without result.
It said the operation continued Wednesday, involving police and National Guard helicopters, drones, ground patrols, and marine police and naval units.
The Mediterranean holiday island is a favourite destination for visitors from Poland, and local hotels have reported an increase in tourism coinciding with Easter.
