The Greek Film Society Sydney is preparing for its latest screening of 2025 as they showcase Manos Arvanitakis’ documentary ‘The Charcoal Makers of Ikaria’.

The screening will take place at 7pm on Thursday 29 May at The Atlas Community and Cultural Centre in Marrickville, wherein they share the story of the charcoal makers of Ikaria who worked all over Greece in the past to make this valuable fuel that preceded the age of petroleum.

The film’s synopsis highlights how Ikarian men and women talk about the hardships of the past in the documentary, with it following the process of a firing from beginning to end on the island.

The descendants of Ikarians can be found in various areas of Greece where they brought their values and way of life to local communities.

The Society’s announcement stressed the quality of the documentary, which is beautifully shot and contains a number of larger-than-life characters who convey a unique existence and time period.
