It was a bad day at the office for the Greeks in Madrid, with Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari both knocked out of contention.

Tsitsipas lost his second match to Italian Lorenzo Musetti 5-7, 6(3)-7, while Sakkari also suffered a straight sets loss to Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-4.

Despite Tsitsipas taking an early lead and creating break chances, rising star Musetti showed his resilience, denying his opponent and mounting a comeback to seize control of the match.

Musetti has previously struggled against Tsitsipas, losing his first five matches against him.

But that problem seems to be behind him as this win now makes it two in a row against Tsitsipas, having also beaten in the quarter-final in Monte-Carlo two weeks ago.

Sakkari on the other hand was enjoying a good run in Madrid, reaching the Round of 16 after winning her first three matches including a huge win over sixth seed Jasmine Paolini last time out.

Svitolina simply had too much fight for Sakkari, outmanoeuvring the Greek to rack up five breaks of serve to the Sakkari’s two.
