The Greek Orthodox Community of St George in Brisbane is set to host the annual Alex Kondos Memorial Lecture ahead of its upcoming Paniyiri Festival, with this year’s event celebrating the enduring legacy of iconic composer Mikis Theodorakis, 100 years after his birth.

Titled “The Universality of Mikis Theodorakis as a Holistic Cultural and Artistic Phenomenon,” the lecture will be delivered by George Lignos, a distinguished musicologist, producer, and audio engineer.

The event will take place on Wednesday, 14 May at 7:30pm in the Grand Ballroom of the Greek Club, offering an in-depth exploration of Theodorakis’s life and creative output, and highlighting how his work transcended national, political, religious, and artistic boundaries.

In a press release, the organisation noted that Theodorakis’s fusion of music, poetry, politics, and cultural consciousness represents a unified expression of identity and spirit—one that continues to resonate across generations and cultures.

Complementing the lecture, there will be live musical performances by the combined choirs of the Greek Orthodox Community of St George, Ellinikes Fones, Ellinikes Fones Junior, and GOC Care Fones, along with special guest performers.

The lecture serves as a cultural prelude to the Paniyiri Festival, which will take place the weekend of 17–18 May.
