The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) has urged the re-elected Albanese government to continue its stated commitment to a strong, inclusive and cohesive society.
FECCA issued its congratulations to the Prime Minister and the Labor Party on its re-election, noting that Albanese emphasised in his post-election remarks the importance of unity, shared values and respect for diversity.
The group highlighted that these principles are essential to effective public policy and a fairer Australia.
“With a strong mandate, we urge the Government to act on these priorities as FECCA stands ready to support practical, community-driven outcomes,” FECCA Chair Peter Doukas said in a press release.
“This is a chance to build on existing commitments and deliver meaningful change for Australia’s multicultural communities.”
In line with these commitments, FECCA encourages the Australian Government to prioritise practical actions that will strengthen inclusion and equity, including:
- Delivering a National Anti-Racism Strategy that is coordinated, resourced and sustained.
- Improving access to culturally appropriate health and wellbeing services across all settings.
- Supporting the recognition of migrant and refugee skills and qualifications to enable economic and social participation.
- Supporting the education of migrants and refugees in Australia.
- Expanding secure migration pathways and permanent residency options.
- Embedding co-design with multicultural communities in relevant policy and program development.
They noted that “these actions would demonstrate the Government’s intention to turn values into measurable outcomes”.
“FECCA looks forward to working with the Government and responsible ministers to support the implementation of these priorities and ensure that multicultural communities are considered across all areas of policy,” the group said in its press release.
“We welcome the opportunity for continued engagement and partnership over the next term of government.”
