A strong 4.5 magnitude earthquake rattled parts of central Greece in the early hours of Monday, with tremors felt across Attica, including Athens, and as far as the Sporades islands and Elefsina.
According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the quake occurred at 3:23am local time on Monday, 19 May 2025. Its epicentre was located 3 kilometres east of Prokopi, Evia, at a depth of 16.9 kilometres, based on revised seismic data.
An earlier automated reading placed the epicentre 8 kilometres east of Prokopi at a shallower depth of 5 kilometres. Initial reports had also cited the epicentre as 6 kilometres northeast of Prokopi.
The tremor was widely felt not only in many areas of Attica but also in the Sporades islands, including Skiathos and Skopelos, and in Elefsina, west of Athens.
Just 20 minutes after the main quake, a second tremor measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale struck the same region at 3:43am. This aftershock was recorded 8 kilometres northeast of Prokopi, with a focal depth of 5 kilometres.
No damage or injuries have been reported so far, but authorities continue to monitor seismic activity in the region.
