More than just a night of celebration, the 50th Anniversary Ball of Saint Dimitrios Parish in Ascot Vale on Sunday, proved to be a moving tribute to a rich spiritual legacy and an enduring community.
Held in the packed parish hall, the milestone event was attended by high-ranking ecclesiastical and political figures, reflecting the significance of the parish’s contribution to both the Greek Orthodox faithful and the broader community.
Among the notable guests were Metropolitan of Dervis Ezekiel, Bishop of Chora Evmenios, Leader of the State Opposition Brad Battin, and Liberal Member of Parliament Moira Deeming.
In his address, Metropolitan Ezekiel spoke of the parish’s humble beginnings as an Incorporated Association in 1962, and the laying of the church’s foundation in 1975.
“We do not fear the future,” he said, “being so proud of our past and having laid such strong foundations.”
His words resonated with the many in attendance whose lives have been shaped by the parish over the decades.
Bishop Evmenios of Chora followed with a speech emphasising the importance of active participation in parish life.
“Now more than ever, we need engaged and faithful parishioners,” he said.
He issued a call to the younger generation, encouraging them to become involved in the life of the church, and expressed high praise for the dedication of current parish priest Father John Frangos, describing him as “indefatigable” in his spiritual and pastoral efforts.
Parish President John Toussas provided a detailed account of the parish’s development, paying special tribute to the late Father Panayiotis Stylianopoulos, who served as parish priest for more than 40 years.
Toussas praised Father Panayiotis, describing him as “intrinsic to the very heart and soul of Saint Dimitrios”.
Special mention was also made of Father Emmanuel Lykopandis, who served at the parish for over 20 years, providing guidance and becoming especially loved by parishioners.
A visual tribute in the form of a slideshow reel offered attendees a journey through time, featuring photographs and footage spanning the early construction phases, religious festivals, youth group activities, and significant community events.
As the celebrations continued into the night, it was clear that Saint Dimitrios Parish remains not just a house of worship, but a testament to the strength and spirit of a community.
