When Anna Sierros migrated from Greece to Australia in 1970, she brought with her more than language and tradition—she carried a personal story of resilience and cultural pride that would shape a lifelong career in education.
Raised in a home deeply connected to Greek customs, Anna’s early life was marked by both hardship and strength. After the passing of their father during their early teens, Anna and her brother Greg were raised by their mother, who to this day does not speak English. With unwavering determination, she instilled in them the values, language, and traditions of their homeland—nurturing a strong cultural identity that would guide Anna’s path.
That foundation laid the groundwork for Anna’s passion for teaching. She began her career in 1995 in Coober Pedy, a remote mining town in South Australia, where she taught in a Greek bilingual class. Over the following two years, she continued to champion Greek language through LOTE (Languages Other Than English) programs, helping raise its profile in local schools.
After returning to Adelaide, Anna taught in a variety of educational settings—from mainstream classrooms to behavioural support units. Her adaptability and ability to connect with students from all walks of life established her as a respected educator and advocate for inclusive learning.
In 2023, Anna joined Roxby Downs Area School as the Greek Language and Culture teacher. Before her arrival, students had only been exposed to Spanish. For many, Greece—its language, cuisine, mythology, and geography—was entirely unfamiliar.
Anna started with the basics: the Greek alphabet and simple greetings, gradually introducing students to the depth and richness of Hellenic culture. From traditional dishes to ancient myths, she brought Greece to life in the classroom.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding to see students develop curiosity and confidence as they begin to connect with the language and culture of Greece,” Anna says.
For her, teaching Greek is not just about language—it’s about identity, belonging, and honouring heritage. Through her work, Anna pays tribute to the strength of her mother, the memory of her father, and the vibrant culture that shaped her life. And in doing so, she brings a piece of Greece to the heart of the Australian outback—one lesson at a time.
