The Greek Festival of Sydney has made another key addition to its youth-driven initiatives with the introduction of the first ever Greek Australian Youth Filmmaking Competition, which will feature as part of this year’s Greek Film Festival of Sydney.
The Competition represents a brand-new youth-centred endeavour by the Festival, with the artistic talents of our youngsters afforded another platform to shine.
The event is presented in collaboration with the Department of Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies at the University of Sydney, with the theme being ‘Greek Australian Panorama’.
The initiative is open to any and all young filmmakers across the country, whether they are Greek, Greek Australian or Greek-at-heart, inviting them to explore and celebrate the rich tapestry of the Greek Australian experience via the art of film.
Submissions are open until 31 August with films of any style or form allowed, such as Short Film, Documentary, Music Video and Film Essay.
There is a maximum running time of ten minutes, and the language of the film can be either English or Greek. The organisers noted that Greek-language entries must feature English subtitles.
The submissions, which will receive feedback from an independent judging panel, will be screened at the 30th Greek Film Festival of Sydney later this year.
An overall Best Short Film winner will be announced at a special event during the Film Festival and will receive a prize of $2000.
The event expands the Greek Film Festival which continues to branch out and evolve even in its 30th edition.
The Competition becomes the second youth-centric initiative of the Film Festival, adding to the pre-existing Greek Student Short Film Festival that will celebrate its 13th edition this year.
