If you’ve ever chuckled at a reel of a Greek mum vacuuming at 7am on a Sunday while screaming “Βάλε παντόφλες, θα σε πιάσει το ρεύμα!” (Put slippers on or the current will catch you!), chances are you’ve landed on Are You Even Greek? Behind the screen is not a media company, but Kristina Liotis—a soft-spoken, Melbourne-born mother-of-two who, between school drop-offs and soccer practice, has captured the cultural zeitgeist of the Greek diaspora in meme form.

“I’m just a little louder on the page,” Kristina tells Neos Kosmos. “It’s not a persona. The voice on the page is me—just the boldest part of me out in the open.”

Her humour lands because it’s rooted not just in shared experience, but also in deep affection. “In my real life, I’m juggling homework, English school, Greek school, after-school activities. And in between all that, I’ll randomly get an idea for a reel.”

What started as a creative outlet during maternity leave quickly spiralled into something bigger.

“My friends kept saying, ‘You need to make a page,’ so I finally did,” she recalls.

Now, Are You Even Greek? is no longer just a passion project, it’s Kristina’s full-time work. “I collaborate with a range of businesses, including restaurants, food brands, publishers, and cultural initiatives. That said, I’m very selective. I only work with people and businesses that genuinely align with my values and respect the culture I’m celebrating and preserving. I feel really grateful to have built something meaningful and to be able to support my family doing what I love.”

Despite her growing profile, Kristina resists the influencer label.

“There’s a fine line between satire and stereotype, and I think about it all the time. Am I laughing with us or at us? If it doesn’t come from love, I don’t post it,” she says.

One follower’s message stayed with her: “My dad was going through chemo and your videos were the only thing that made him laugh.” “That changed everything for me. It reminded me this page isn’t just about being funny. It’s about connection.”

That connection runs deep. Kristina’s roots stretch from Kerkyra to Lesvos, with Asia Minor ancestry on her mother’s side.

“One of my strongest memories is falling asleep on chairs at dances, surrounded by cousins, food and laughter. That warmth, that sense of being held by your community, that’s what I want to recreate for my kids too.”

In a digital age of filters and noise, Kristina’s page feels like a modern kafeneio, “with fewer cigarettes and more emojis.”

She’s been invited onto Angelo Tsarouchas’s podcast, met Anna Vissi, and launched Greek Eats, a growing platform spotlighting Greek cuisine in Australia.

“Food is such a huge part of who we are. I want to create a proper guide to Greek food in Melbourne and eventually Australia-wide.”

Still, she’s cautious about scale. “I’m not interested in going viral for the sake of it. If it doesn’t feel like me, I won’t post it.”

Even with over 100,000 followers, she reminds us she’s just like everyone else, navigating parenting and identity in real time.

“People assume I have a content strategy,” she laughs. “But honestly? It’s usually an idea that comes to me between school pickup and soccer. I record it quickly and hope it makes someone smile.”

Mixing ancient Greek culture with souvlaki. The perfect win-win situation.

What she’s created is the product of heart, humour, and cultural fluency.

“I love being Greek. I love our history, our jokes, our contradictions. I want to show that off proudly and make people feel seen.”

Her advice to other creatives or to any mum sitting on an idea?

Sharing her best pics of Greek street food in Melbourne and beyond.

“Start. Even if it’s messy, even if it’s small. What’s meant for you will unfold—but only if you give it somewhere to grow.”

In a scroll saturated with polished personas and performative trends, Kristina’s page stands out not just for lols, but for reminding us where we come from.

“Are You Even Greek? isn’t just funny memes for me. It’s a love letter. It reminds me of where we’ve come from and gives us permission to laugh all the way home.”

Kristina isn’t only fun, food and games – she also shares informative posts that honour milestones in Greek history and key influential personalities like George Papanikolaou.
